IDEAL TIPS WHEN DINING OUT AT A RESTAURANT
In America, while it is not mandatory, it is normal for you to tip your server in a restaurant. For excellent service, there is a tipping standard for average tips. Unsure how much? Here are some tipping standards to help guide you.
Tip Based on Level of Service
Tipping percentages average between 10%-20% range in America. When dining in restaurants, the average tip is 15% for good service. (That is 20% of the total amount of your bill.) For excellent service, average is 20% or higher.
Should you tip other workers at the restaurant?
In some cases, the waiter or waitress might not be the only ones who helped make your dining experience great. Other staff members of the venue contributed to it and you are welcome to tip them.
It could be the coat attendant, the guy who opens the door and welcomes you warmly, the washroom attendant, or the valet who parks your car properly while you go eat in peace. Average tip for these people can range from $5 – $20 (or higher) depending on the quality of the restaurant.
Unsure of what 20% of your tab is? There are a few tip calculating apps available in your app store. Here’s a simple trick on how to calculate a 20% tip:
- Move the decimal point in your bill one digit towards the left. Example: you get $5.375 from $53.75.
- Double that number. (= $10.75)
- Viola! That is 20% of your total bill and your tip.

Tipping on Gift Certificates
Paying with a gift card? Tip on the amount of your total bill, not the amount you’re paying minus the gift card amount. The server went through the same trouble to serve you regardless of the form of your payment.
You should know that your tip goes a long way in the life of the server.
In their struggle to survive in the real world, servers rely on their tips because their salary is negligible. Most people don’t know that some states allow a “tip credit” to count as part of the minimum wage of $7.25/hour (for example), therefore, tipped employees may get paid as low as $2.00 an hour plus tips. So their hourly pay is much lower than you would think.
Lastly, compliment your server!
Complimenting a server on the great job they did may go a long way in brightening up their day as they server customers all day, in and out.
One of the best ways for restaurant owners and staff to improve their service is to listen to your opinions and feedback. So next time you dine out, and see the comment card? Go ahead and rate the servers’ service if you loved him/her! It’ll make their day and highlight their excellent servicing skills to their manager!
